about

During the early onset of the 2020 lockdown I would go on daily walks with my friends Mara and Abby. On one of these walks we passed by some storage units with a pile of ripped open trash bags in front of them. A loose LP with no jacket had fallen out of one of the trash bags and was laying on the rough concrete alongside a toothbrush, a soiled stuffed animal and some self-help books. The center label just read "KEITH (written - composed - performed)" and from the song titles I could definitely tell it was a Christian private press release. After taking it home and listening, I felt such a real and deep connection to Keith's sad/downer tracks like "Something's Wrong" and "Take Things In Stride" that I spent a lot of those long nights listening to the whole record on repeat - drunk with headphones on in my backyard, trying to process grief and slowly killing myself with consumption. Before too long all of the songs began to sound great to me, and I found myself singing along to unlikely tracks like "Christian". I became a bit obsessed, which was really only encouraged by the fact that I couldn't find any information about Keith or the record online.

I'm grateful that religion wasn't forced on me as a child, and I feel privileged that I'm able to listen to things like didactic religious propaganda with an almost abstract mindset. It's understandable that some people whom Christianity has intentionally targeted and oppressed for centuries (like women for instance), may not have the same tolerance for Keith's music. I've never had any interest whatsoever in any type of religion or new-age marketing scheme, but I have had a life-long love for taking things out of context, stealing, and not accepting somebody else's idea of somebody else's world.

If you're able to, I hope you enjoy Keith's music as much as I have.
